Marcello
Pucci
,
Born in Urbino in 1962.
Self-taught
artist. He first met clay in 1998 after a rich production of iron
artworks.
That was the start of a formal and technical research on different
kinds of clay which is still on-going.
He Follows the technique used in ancient Rome in the 1st century B.C.
called 'sealed ceramic' (Terre Sigillate).
The light beauty released by the research of precious materials in
the silt of rivers and in the clay of abandoned pits,
sometimes distracts the observer from the forms which the artist creates
when shaping the matter.
He participates in national and international contests and exhibitions,
receiving full recognition from both critics and visitors.

Ceramica
sigillata (sealed
ceramics)
“ceramica sigillata” is a fine type of pottery (to be used as table
service pottery)diffused in the antique roman period.
It’s prime characteristic is it’s red coloration, varying in intensity,
with a relief decoration which is moulded, applied,
or impressed.some examples have seals which bear the name of the type
of ceramics, or of the producer.
History
from the middle of the 1st century. B.c. , the black coloured ceramics
gradually disappeared from the mediterranean
countries productions, replaced by this new finer class of vases,
which originated in the middle east, and became
diffused in italy, where the best production was in arezzo “aretina”.
The so called “vernice” (paint) is realized by a processof decanting
the clay in rain water in which a flocking agent helps
the deposit of calcium on the base, and suspends the clay particles
in rain water making a glasslike surface on the clay.
The colour of the finished article depends on the colour of the paint
and the tecnique used in the firing(baking) of the clay,
using a good airing system which helps to give a reddish colour, or
by reducing the oxygen, and regulating the movement
of the air which enters the oven, and thus realizing a black colour
with metallic reflections.
The italian production and aretina ceramics
The style was introduced in italy by the numerous italian traders
and the legionary, who had lived in the eastern regions .
The first production of “ceramica sigillata” appeared in italy in
the 1st century B.c. and the largest center of production
was in aretium (known today as arezzo) in etruria, from where it took
the name “aretina ceramics”.
Another important center of production was near the port of puteoli
(today known as pozzuoli)starting from the period of
augustea after the roman emporer augusto, this type of ceramics was
largely diffused.
The reddish coloration of these pieces varies from factory to factory,
and the production was standardized on not too many
shapes(mainly goblets, bowls, and cups) the decoration was mainly inspired
by the silverware productions of that age.
